We believe everyone has a right to good quality education. We also believe that becoming a life-long learner starts in the early years.
The first major project undertaken by GIWC was the construction in 1985 of the Berekuso Day Care Centre. Currently, the BDCC has an enrolment of 85 children between the ages of 3 and 8 years. After 37 years of good service to the community of Berekuso, the Day Care Centre is badly in need of up-grading.
Our plans to upgrade BDCC to a model school
We have engaged a firm of architects to assess the entire school infrastructure. On their recommendations, the infrastructure of the school will be upgraded in the following ways:
The classroom block, which houses 3 classrooms, and two offices will be renovated with new roofing, rewired electricals and lighting, upgraded windows and doors, and repainted inside and out, or will be completely rebuilt, depending on cost comparisons.
To replace the existing KVIPs that have recently been condemned, a new ablution block will be constructed with 6 Bio-filtering toilets, showers, hand-washing basins, and a changing area.
A kitchen and an outdoor dining area will be constructed. This will enable us to offer a full feeding programme. The dining area will also be a multipurpose learning space.
A children’s vegetable garden will be installed to give the children practical skills, as well as to supply the school kitchen with wholesome food.
A new adventure playground will be installed
By collaborating with the Elumis Foundation, a US based NGO, we hope to provide laptop computers for every child, and provide families with home solar electricity kits.
How can you help?
Because the early years are so important to the long-term development of each learner, we ask that you consider donating in cash or kind to any or all of the following:
The School Building Fund
We need to raise approximately Ghc750,000 to adequately undertake the proposed infrastructure improvements.

Student care packages
We are providing a care package to every student that will include school uniforms (regular uniforms, Friday Ghana Wear shirt, and t-shirt and shorts for PE and sport), sandals, a nap bag (sleeping sack) and pillow, a bowl and cutlery for meals, pencils, crayons, coloured pencils, a book bag, reading and activity books, chair back organisers to hold water bottles etc. In addition, we are aiming to provide a laptop for each child, and a home solar electricity kit for each family.

Full school feeding programme
The school is included in the government free lunch programme, but for many this meal is their only food for the entire day. Sadly at least one third of our pupils arrive at school in the morning not having eaten breakfast. This is very detrimental to their learning, as these children are inadequately nourished for almost the entire school day. They lack energy, have difficulty concentrating and are generally delayed in their learning. High levels of absenteeism have been observed amongst this group of pupils. We intend to provide breakfast on campus prior to the start of each school day to eliminate these issues. We would be most grateful for any food donations to enable us to run the breakfast programme, eg, Koko, Tom Brown, kenkey, eggs, rice fruit, bread, sardines, tuna, tomato paste etc.
